A New Billy for Broadway’s ‘Elliot’By PATRICK HEALYMarch 24, 2009, 5:04 PM
The Three Billys of Broadway are no more — or, to be precise, they’ve grown by one. The producers of the musical “Billy Elliot” — who have largely based their publicity campaign on the three young actors who rotate in the title role of the boy ballerina — announced Tuesday afternoon that they had added a fourth actor, Tommy Batchelor, to the lineup of Billys. Mr. Batchelor, 13, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., began dancing when he was 4, and has been an understudy for the three Billys: David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish. A spokeswoman for the Tony Awards eligibility committee said that its ruling allows the original Three Billys to be considered for a nomination — not Mr. Batchelor — and that this decision would not be revisited.
